What are the membership benefits?

What are the requirements for attorneys to join?

To be eligible to join, you must accrue 80 CLE credit hours (including 3 ethics) in 3 calendar years, or 45 hours (including 3 ethics) in 1 calendar year and pay the $75 annual membership dues.

Self-study: You are allowed to claim 6 hours (1 ethics) of self-study per year. Therefore, 18 hours of the 80-hour requirement and 6 hours of the 45-hour requirement may be claimed through self-study.

What are the requirements for newly licensed attorneys to join?

Newly licensed attorneys can join for a reduced rate of $40 upon completion of 45 hours (including 3 ethics) within the first 2 years of licensure.

Self-study: You are allowed to claim 6 hours (1 ethics) of self-study per year. Therefore, 12 hours of the 2-year / 45-hour requirement may be claimed through self-study.

What are the requirements for paralegals to join?

To be eligible to join, you must accrue 12 CLE credit hours (including 2 ethics) and complete the application form. Visit the paralegal membership page for more details.

Self-study credit: 2 hours (including 1 ethics) of the 12-hour requirement may be claimed through self-study.

Teaching credit: 3 hours of the 12-hour requirement may be claimed through teaching continuing legal education courses.

What are the requirements to maintain / renew my membership?

Attorneys: To maintain your membership in the College, you must accrue 24 (2 ethics) course credit hours plus 6 (1 ethics) self-study hours, for a total of 30 credit hours per calendar year. You are allowed to carry forward up to 15 hours from the prior calendar year. Membership dues are $75 annually and due by December 31st. View your current transcript in My Bar Page on texasbar.com.

Paralegals: You must accrue 10 (1 ethics) course credit hours plus 2 (1 ethics) self-study hours for a total of 12 credit hours per calendar year. You are allowed to carry forward up to 6 hours from the prior calendar year. You must also complete the application form and pay the $40 annual membership dues by December 31st. Where do I view my transcript?

Visit texasbar.com/CollegeTranscript to view your transcript, check the status of your membership, and renew.

How do I claim self-study?

Attorneys: You claim self-study in the same place you claim course attendance. Log into My Bar Page on texasbar.com, select View/Report MCLE Hours, then select Add Attendance. There is a self-study tab. The Bar College allows 6 hours (1 ethics) of self-study per year. You can claim as many hours as you accrue, but they will only count the amount allowed per year.

Paralegals: You are allowed to claim 2 hours (1 ethics) of self-study per year. Include the hours in your list of courses on the application and renewal form.

Here are all of the activities that count as self-study:

1) reading legal articles, advances sheets, case summaries, CLE course materials, etc.

2) part-time, paid teaching at a law school or college.

3) judging or critiquing mock trials

4) viewing videotapes of non-accredited CLE programs

5) listening to audiotapes of non-accredited CLE programs

6) all other types of individual study of legal materials or information.

How do I request an extension?

To maintain your membership, you need to accrue the required credit hours and pay the membership dues by December 31st. If you need an extension past that date, please contact us.

How do I pay my membership dues?

Attorneys: Visit texasbar.com/CollegeTranscript to check the status of your membership and renew.

Paralegals: Visit our Paralegal Membership page to complete the renewal application and pay your membership dues.

Where do I mail a payment?

Attorneys: Visit texasbar.com/CollegeTranscript to check the status of your membership and renew.

Paralegals: Visit our paralegal membership page to complete the renewal application and pay your membership dues.

Other Payment Methods
College website: You may pay on the College website. These are manually processed, so it will be several days before your records are updated.

Pay by check: Please make your check payable to the Texas Bar College and write your Bar Number on the memo line. Mail to the address below. Checks are also manually processed and can result in significant delays.

What is Senior Status?

Senior Status: An attorney who has at least five years of consecutive membership in the College and who is 70 years of age or older will qualify for continued membership by maintaining at least 15 hours of CLE (half of the hours required for regular members) per College membership year.

Emeritus: Texas Bar College Fellows who have maintained membership for 30 or more consecutive years and are currently on Inactive Status with the State Bar of Texas receive Texas Bar College membership benefits complimentary on an annual basis.
